Scanning Printed Photos
I recommend that printed photos are organized before scanning so that duplicates are not scanned and they can be better organized as digital images. There are several steps to getting your photos ready to scan. You can do this yourself, or it can be done during a photo organizing session.
1. Remove photos from any albums.
2. Group photos by year and size.
3. Label each group with the year in photo boxes. This will be included on your digital image.
If you have traditional album pages, these can also be scanned to have a back-up copy or to create a digital book. This is a wonderful option if you have multiple family members who would like a copy and preserve the handwriting in a book. Here is an example of this type of book: Traditional Book to Digital.

Tips for estimating:
One inch of photos ~ 100 photos
One pound of photos ~ 145 photos
Archival Photo Boxes hold ~1200 photos
Scanned photos are turned the right direction and dated by year. They can then be organized in a digital system. Extra editing of photos as well as adding names, places, and stories included with the photos adds to your memory, but this does require additional time. This can be part of your organizing package.
